Aurélia, 9, undergoing treatment for a brain tumour
In May 2019, just as she was about to celebrate her third birthday, Aurélia’s life took an unexpected turn. After visits to an optometrist and her pediatrician, she was admitted to the emergency department at CHU Sainte-Justine. A scan revealed a large brain tumour located at the junction of her optic nerves.
For her family, this marked the beginning of a long medical journey. Today, her parents are profoundly grateful to the Fondation Charles-Bruneau, as advances in biopsy techniques played a critical role in making it possible to identify and treat their daughter’s tumour.
Now nine years old, the young girl from Mirabel stands out for her remarkable maturity and determination. One of her proudest accomplishments is completing her 45-minute MRI scans fully awake, something she has been doing since she was just three years old.
To benefit from the latest advances in pediatric oncology, Aurélia is participating in a targeted therapy clinical trial. Although her tumour showed signs of progression this past January, her condition has since stabilized, allowing her medical team to gradually reduce her treatment.
Nothing slows down this endlessly curious young girl. She loves swimming, cheerleading and rock climbing, and dreams of becoming a teacher one day.
Touched by the support surrounding her, Aurélia wanted to share this message with everyone taking part in the Tour CIBC Charles-Bruneau: “A huge thank you! We must continue supporting research to discover new treatments and reduce the long-term side effects experienced by children diagnosed with cancer.”
