Some stories stand the test of time without ever losing their power. Sophie Valence’s story is one of them.
From 2007 to 2012, Sophie was a child ambassador for the Tour CIBC Charles-Bruneau. At the time, she was only a few years old, but even then, she left a lasting impression with her radiant presence. Today, at 24, she returns with a journey that gives full meaning to the Foundation’s commitment.
A Trial That Shaped Her Path
At age 5, Sophie was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare tumor located behind the eye. Six months of intensive treatment later, she was in remission.
What she takes away from that period goes beyond the illness. She speaks of the bond with the healthcare teams, the dedication of the researchers, and the care of the nurses. An environment that, despite the ordeal, left a profoundly positive mark on her life.
Very early on, an idea took root: one day, she would contribute in her own way.

Growing Up with the Tour
The Tour CIBC Charles-Bruneau holds a special place in her journey. She remembers it as a defining moment, almost surreal for a child.
Hundreds of cyclists, kilometres covered, a collective energy focused on children like her.
Over the years, Sophie grew up with the Tour. She met participants, discovered the extent of their commitment, and gradually came to understand what it all meant. It was no longer just impressive; it was deeply inspiring.

Turning Experience into Commitment
Today, Sophie is finishing her medical studies at McGill University. Her journey doesn’t end there.
She has also become involved in research, working on identifying new treatments targeting mutations linked to rhabdomyosarcoma. It’s a concrete way to connect her personal story to scientific advancements.
Recently, she was accepted into a pediatric residency program at the University of Sherbrooke. A decisive step toward her goal: providing specialized care to children and helping to advance medicine.

A community that endures
For Sophie, the Charles-Bruneau Foundation isn’t just tied to a single event. It’s a constant presence, a community that supports, encourages, and brings people together.
As she grows up, she realizes that behind every initiative, there is a real impact. Children who can dream bigger. Families who feel supported. Journeys like hers that become possible.
Moving forward, together
Sophie’s journey reminds us why the Tour exists.
Every kilometer traveled, every donation, every gesture helps advance research and improve treatments. Now cured, soon to be a pediatrician, she embodies this continuity between what has been experienced and what remains to be built.
Her message is clear: there is still a long way to go, but every commitment counts.
And some stories, like hers, make us want to keep pedaling.
